The premiere episode of Packing for Mars pays tribute to a handful of firsts: The launch of Sputnik; the subsequent launch of Sputnik 2, carrying Laika, the dog; further astro-animals Ham, the chimp, and Felicette, the cat; additional lost souls whose existence are still left to speculation; Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space; and Sally Ride, the first American woman in space.

Series premiere. Two years after a sudden relocation, troubled couple Nadine and Alex struggle to fully settle into their new home. Nadine gets kicked off of mental health leave only to be diagnosed with colon cancer, increasing her anxiety and weed intake. Flashbacks show the stark difference between their halcyon days and current situation.

Season finale. Flashing back two years to the days after the fire that destroyed their apartment, Nadine struggles with fantasies of suicide. In present day, she faces a backslide to the same dark place as her surgery date nears.
